This was taken in 1961 at New Brighton in Christchurch, where I was born. My immediate family later moved to Greymouth, then New Plymouth, but Christmas holidays were often spent at the beach when we went back to visit my grandparents.
We also scattered my dad’s ashes there after he died. Even though I’ve travelled overseas often, this photo sums up the quintessential New Zealand summer for me, spent chasing the sun. And those frocks! Pictured from left are my grandmother (with my sister Robin), my mum with me and my grandmother’s sister.
