Gently unfolding tales about everyday people are Anne Tyler’s speciality. She writes of families and marriages, and about unremarkable lives, but because she is such a wonderful storyteller, there is nothing ordinary about her novels. Start with a recent one, A Spool of Blue Thread, which is about four generations of a family who live in Baltimore. It’s wise, truthful and completely wonderful.
