It’s your time IN THE SUN

Summer at last! We know we’re supposed to be sun smart, but a lot of New Zealanders are still getting sunburnt

-

Kiwis spend an average of 21 hours in the sun each week, according to a recent survey*. That’s a substantial amount of sun exposure! The survey also discovered that more than half of us admit to having been sunburnt in the past year. “Disappointingly, 59% of Kiwis say they were sunburnt at least once in the past 12 months,” says Associate Professor Rosemary Nixon, Consultant Dermatologist. “A few simple steps to stay protected in the sun is all it takes to reduce this number and make it easy to enjoy the summer months safely.” Many people are using less sunscreen than they need. Both adults and children should use seven teaspoons of product for each application: one for each limb, one for your front, one for your back and one for the face, neck and ears. Reapplication is important too. We should be aiming to reapply at least every two hours, and even more often after swimming and towel drying. It’s also likely you’ll need to restock your sunscreen every summer as it can perish. Store it below 30°C and check those expiry dates! The Banana Boat range comes in lotion and clear spray, with lots of options for adults, kids and babies – so you can find the type that suits you and your family. It’s SPF50+ across all products and o˜ers broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection, easy application and a great skin feel. Look out for Banana Boat in supermarkets and pharmacies.
