It was only just before Christmas last year that Bill and Mary English welcomed the Weekly to Wellington to talk about their recent political defeat.
It was obvious at the time that the couple were doing some soul-searching as they reflected on a tumultuous year in politics – and, indeed, almost three decades in the difficult business. But they were positive and buoyant, enjoying the opportunity to spend more time together and obviously already in the early stages of coming to a conclusion about what to do next as they embark on the unknown.
It was certainly relief that came across as the strongest emotion Mary was feeling when our assistant editor Kelly Bertrand spoke with her just hours after the news was announced that her husband was stepping down from his role as leader.
We’re sure it’s not the last we’ll see of this couple in the Weekly and we wish them the very best in this new chapter of their lives together.

I was floored when our writer Ciara Pratt told me an outline of what this story would be about and as the weeks have gone by, their story has taken a very tragic turn, but the way they have dealt with it is simply incredible. They’re a truly selfless, inspirational couple and we thank them for sharing their journey with us.
