The final piece of the puzzle has been placed – Tobias Menzies has been announced as the actor who will take on the role of Prince Philip in Netflix drama TheCrown.

After much speculation about which British actor would step into 35-year-old Matt Smith’s shoes, it’s been revealed that Tobias (44) will play the Duke of Edinburgh alongside those already cast – Olivia Colman (44), who will take the reins from Claire Foy (33) as the Queen, and Helena Bonham Carter (51), who’s set to play Princess Margaret.

The trio will appear on screens for seasons three and four of the hit series, which will follow the royal family during the 1970s and ’80s.

Eager fans will have plenty to look forward to in upcoming episodes with producers letting slip about the storylines they will be focusing on. Dramas include the breakdown of Margaret’s marriage to Lord Snowdon, and the introduction of Camilla Parker Bowles – or Camilla Shand as she was known

– as she meets a young

Prince Charles.

Tobias is no stranger to royal roles, having recently finished playing the Duke of Cornwall in a BBC production of King Lear alongside Sir Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson. In a slightly different regal vein, the British star also played Brutus in the TV show Rome.

But patience will be key. Royal fans shouldn’t expect season three until 2019 – we can barely wait!
