Time for the BIG MOVE?

IT CAN BE A DAUNTING DECISION, SO HOW DO YOU KNOW IF LIVING IN A RETIREMENT VILLAGE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

-

Before deciding whether to move into a retirement village, there are some key questions to ask first. An important thing to think about, says Ryman Healthcare Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod, is what your health and lifestyle needs might look like 10 years down the track. “Many of our residents take great comfort in knowing that we off€er a full continuum of care,” he says. “They may not need the services, but just knowing they’re available can off€er great peace of mind.” Gordon knows from personal experience just how high the standards of care are at Ryman – his nana was a resident at Margaret Stoddart Retirement Village in Christchurch. “She loved it, and my family and I were delighted with the care she received.” Once you know the village can cater to all of your needs, it makes sense to compare what each operator is off€ering. One of the key considerations is the deferred management fee (DMF). This is the portion of your capital sum that the operator retains when you vacate the unit. “At Ryman Healthcare, our DMF is capped at 20%, which is one of the most favourable rates in the sector,” says Gordon. Another consideration is the weekly fee, he says. The weekly fee includes gardening and maintenance costs, as well as local rates. “The fact that Ryman’s weekly fee is fixed for life* is a huge drawcard for many people and something we really pride ourselves on. Just knowing that expense stays the same is a bonus.” The best way to see if village life is for you is to go and take a look for yourself, says Gordon. That way you can speak to current residents and sta€ about what’s included. “You should consider whether you can get around the village easily. Is it convenient to transport links, shops and other community facilities? Does the village provide a van for outings? Are the grounds and gardens well maintained and free for you to enjoy? “Of course, the fastest way is to ask our residents. They’ll be happy to put you in the picture. “I regularly visit our villages and care centres, and spend time with our residents, their families and the care teams. I am always humbled by the kindness and individualised care that our residents receive,” says Gordon. “In the words of Kevin Hickman, Ryman’s cofounder, our care has got to be ‘ good enough for Mum’.” While Ryman does everything to ensure that prospective residents have all their questions answered, the nine Ryman guarantees off€er that extra bit of peace of mind when making the decision to move into a village. The guarantees, which include Changing Your Mind and a 90- Day Money Back Guarantee, are designed to protect residents’ interests and are considered some of the most resident- friendly terms in New Zealand. “We always put the needs of our residents first – that is the Ryman di € erence.” * Terms & Conditions apply
