CALL WAITING

Miss Five used to arrive home a little before I got home from work. We had a routine where she had to ring Daddy straight away and tell him she was safe. One day, there was no call, so my husband raced home − only to find a note in childish scrawl beside the telephone: “Gone to play, Daddy.”
