COLETTE IS THE BIOGRAPHICAL STORY OF SIDONIE-GABRIELLE COLETTE

-

Based on a true story, Colette follows the life of Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, author of the famed Claudine series. Set in 1890s Paris, the film shows Colette’s (Keira Knightley) fight for recognition of her work and freedom from her egomaniac husband “Willy” (Dominic West). Keira says she was drawn to the character because of the pair’s complicated relationship.

“There was a real ring of truth to it,” she explains. “I felt like I, as a woman having been in relationships with men and having worked with men, could really tap into it.”

The film was shot in Hungary, where Keira says the cast and crew sweltered through a 40-degree heat wave.

“We were shooting a lot of dayfor-night, so when you black out all the windows and light a lot of candles and you pretend it’s night-time, it gets infinitely hotter,” she tells. “The boys had it worse, though... And because Dominic was wearing a fat suit, they actually had to build him an entire cooling system in his costume.”
