Albert’s fine legacy

-

Acting legend Albert Finney, who played everything from an angry young man to Annie’s benefactor Daddy Warbucks, has died at the age of 82.

Albert’s family said the star “passed away peacefully after a short illness, with those closest to him by his side”.

The five-time Oscar nominee began acting with the Royal Shakespeare Company before bursting into the international spotlight with the movie Saturday Night and Sunday Morning.

His film career went from strength to strength with

Albert winning acclaim for his portrayals of Hercule Poirot, Winston Churchill, a lawyer in

Erin Brokovich and most recently as an irascible gamekeeper in Bond thriller Skyfall.

His Skyfall co-star Daniel Craig

(50) led the tributes to Albert, “I’m deeply saddened by the news of Albert Finney’s passing,” he said. “The world has lost a giant.”

Notoriously private, the actor seldom talked about his personal life, but did disclose in 2011 that he had been treated for kidney cancer.

Albert was married three times, to actresses Jane Wenham and

Anouk Aimée, and travel agent

Pene Delmage, who he wed in 2006. He is survived by Pene and his son Simon, from his first marriage.
