HARRY WELLS UP!

-

Meanwhile, back in the UK, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped out for their first joint engagement since their tour of Africa last month, attending the WellChild Awards.

It proved to be an emotional evening for the pair, who met up with the winners before the ceremony, which honours children and their families who live with serious health needs. Meghan, who was at the event for the second year running, chatted with the families, telling one girl and her mother, “I just took Archie for his first [playgroup] class. It was a lot of fun. He loved it.”

Meghan also told another family that little Archie does indeed have red hair. “You can see it in his eyebrows,” she revealed.

As excited as his wife was, it was Prince Harry who got choked up later in the evening when presenting the Award for Most Inspirational Child (aged four to six), before he delivered a heartfelt speech. Harry, who has been a patron of WellChild since 2007, revealed he’d had a lot more running through his mind than it appeared when he was there with Meghan the year before.

“Last year when my wife and I attended we knew we were expecting our first child – no-one else did at the time, but we did…” he said, before trailing off, overcome with emotion.

After a pause, he composed himself before continuing, “I remember squeezing Meghan’s hand so tightly during the awards, both of us thinking what it would be like to be parents one day, and more so, what it would be like to do everything we could to protect and help our child should they be born with immediate challenges or become unwell over time.

“And now, as parents, being here and speaking to all of you pulls at my heart strings in a way I could have never understood until I had a child of my own.”
