Every year, the same fierce debate erupts in the Weekly

office – what is the best Christmas song of all time?

Everyone has a strong answer. Senior sub-editor Emma cannot go past Mariah Carey’s seminal classic All I Want for Christmas Is You.

Production editor Rebecca loves the traditional Silent Night. Our creative director Mirella adores Away in a Manger. Designer Nicole’s best-ever option is Do They Know It’s Christmas? while for art director Béla and senior sub-editor Bronwyn, there’s no other option than The Pogues’ Fairytale of New York.

As for myself and editor Alice, this particular debate is one we have with great gusto. We both adore Christmas – the tinsel, the lights, the festive movies, all of it − and we agree on a lot, like the fact Love Actually and Home Alone are the greatest movies of all time, that the world is always a little bit brighter with a festive-smelling candle, and the joy, love and happiness that exudes from everyone during the silly season makes all of the magazine deadline stress worth it!

But we’ll never agree on our favourite song. Alice’s pick, All I Want for Christmas Is You, and mine, Fairytale of New York, will forever be at odds – with both of us trying to ensure our tune gets more airtime over the other! But what a wonderful debate to have.

As you’re reading this, our wider team is deciding on how to adorn our office for the company’s annual decorating competition – last year we went with ‘A Right Royal Christmas’ and we’re also gearing up for the Christmas party, which has a Disney theme.

But if you’re keen to get in on the Christmas tune spirit yourself, turn to page 72 for our on-song quiz!
