Nicky warned this book would be an anxiety-inducing read and, my goodness, she was not wrong. It is so incredibly wellwritten and a very beautiful

book in so many different ways. Had it not been, I would have given up almost immediately due to the current circumstances. The fires in Australia, and every second story on the news at the moment, were the most harrowing backdrop to be reading an apocalyptic novel, set in a world ravaged by climate change. In equal parts I both absolutely loved and loathed this book. Margaret Jennings, Wellington

Did anyone else find David to be an incredible pain in the neck? It’s a possibility that I have been put off it as my ex-husband is named David and unfortunately the character constantly reminded me of him. That made this book tough because I certainly wasn’t rooting for his character! Very frustrating. Anon, Auckland

I’ve just finished this book while sitting outside on our deck, overlooking the city. It’s hazy thanks to the Australian bushfires and reading this book felt like a wake-up call of what might be waiting for our grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. At first I found this very depressing, but instead I am using that energy for good and doing everything I can to chip in and save this planet. Joy, via email

While the premise for this story is really interesting, and relevant, ultimately I wasn’t a great fan of how the story was plotted. I felt the link between the two timelines was tenuous at best, and I had difficulty empathising with Signe. I enjoyed Lou and David’s storyline more but I felt it was rushed in parts. Overall I would give it three stars. Moira, Southland
