New Zealand Woman’s Weekly

FROM THE EDITOR

While the Weekly celebrates women every single week – sharing stories of your hopes, heartbreaks and incredible achievements – this Sunday, March 8, is particularly special: it’s International Women’s Day!

Each year there’s a theme, and for 2020 it’s #EachforEqual. The idea is that each of us can help to create a gender-equal planet, particularly when it comes to the business world.

When I read the international release announcing the theme, I felt that we here at the Weekly had reason to crack a smile. It said the race was on for gender-equal boardrooms, governments, workplaces, and media and sports coverage, as well as more gender equality in health and wealth.

While there’s no getting around the fact that there’s a long way to go to achieve gender equality, especially when it comes to health and wealth, I do believe we’re heading in the right direction.

For a start, last week we celebrated our sports team of the year – our incredible

Silver Ferns! I sat in a publishing meeting for the Weekly that was certainly not gender-equal

– it was all female! And in this week’s issue we feature our

New Zealander of the Year – Jennifer Ward-Lealand Te Atamira – who received her award from none other than our Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern.

Internationally, we’re also celebrating Reese Witherspoon, who is turning the tide for women in Hollywood. And we have our wonderful Weekly People, sharing the stories of amazing Kiwis. We love telling these stories, so do drop me a line if you have a story you’d like to share. Happy

Women’s Day!
