Youth and kids celebrate Matariki

- EMILY FORD

Albany residents are being treated to colourful and interactive Matariki celebrations.

A newcomers event and kite display are two initiatives being led by the Upper Harbour Caucus.

Made by Albany Primary School students with help from the group of teenage representatives, 10 colourful kites are on display at Albany Village Library.

Caucus member Cerina Corrigan was really impressed with the primary school students’ engagement.

‘‘They were all really interested in learning about the youth caucus. I recognised a few future members,’’ Cerina says.

Librarian Neeli Govender says the kites are a beautiful addition to the library.

‘‘I really like the work put in behind it with the collaboration between the youth caucus and the primary school.’’ Govender says.

The Upper Harbour Youth Caucus is made up of about 20 high school students from the region and runs events through the year.

It’s rounding up its Matariki celebrations with a newcomers event on July 16.

Held at Massey University from 9am to 1pm, the group will be teaching people about Maori culture through performances, games and a hangi.
