Battleground for bookworms

- SARAH ROBERTS

It was a battle for book supremacy at the West Harbour Barfoot & Thompson Book Battle.

The inaugural event held at Hobsonville Point Secondary School had more than 120 students from 13 schools battle it out. There were two categories; year 6 and years 7 and 8. The students answered 100 questions on 10 different topics, ranging from bullies to Maori myths and legends to ‘‘whine and cheese’’.

It was a fiercely fought competition with the top placings going to St Paul’s Primary School in first place, Marina View School in second place and Massey Primary School in third.

Huapai District School came first in years 7 and 8 category, Massey Primary School came second and Hobsonville Point Primary School in third place.

The event was organised by schools, librarians and Massey Public Library.

The hope is to encourage liter- acy in schools.

Marina View School librarian Vicki Munro says it’s been a very positive experience and lots of schools will come back next year.

‘‘The kids were really excited even if they didn’t get placed anywhere,’’ she says.

The sponsors of the book battle were West Harbour Barfoot & Thompson, Whitcoulls Northwest and Glenfield Paper Plus.

Students came from schools in Huapai, through to Greenhithe and Swanson.
