Elderly knit for SPCA

- EMILY FORD

Keeping rescue cats warm is not hard, thanks to the efforts of some crafty knitters.

A group of residents at Aria Gardens rest home in Albany have spent the past two years knitting colourful woollen blankets to donate to the cats at SPCA Auckland.

The group, made up of about 10 residents known as the Knitter Knatters, meets every Thursday over a cup of tea, conversation and a pair of knitting needles.

Resident June Fairclough says the cats love the blankets, no matter what colour they are.

‘‘You can talk as much as you like and watch TV and it doesn’t matter because, even if you haven’t got a pattern, I don’t think the cats will mind,’’ Fairclough says.

Aria Gardens used to donate old towels to the SPCA. Then, a few years ago, the group decided to put their knitting needles to good use for the animals.

The group donates a box of blankets to the SPCA every two to three months, with residents working on blankets each week.

Residents and staff then take a day trip to deliver the woollen creations, meet the animals and have a picnic, which is a highlight for the residents.

The residents say they love the group as it is an opportunity to gather over a relaxing hobby and chat.

Resident Marie Tregoweth says she loves the company.

‘‘It’s nice to have chat with people instead of sitting in my room,’’ Tregoweth says.

‘‘It gives us something to do. I call it occupational therapy.’’

Aria Gardens welcomes donations of colourful wool for the knitting group. Contact 09 415 7035 or drop off at 11 Bass Rd, Albany.
