Man’s car attacked with him inside

- ZIZI SPARKS

The victim of a seemingly random attack is disappointed he was left to deal with it alone.

Marc, who doesn’t want his last name used, says he was driving along Albany Highway at about 7pm on a Monday night when the car in front of him stopped near Albany Senior High School.

‘‘This silver BMW stopped in the middle of the road and the driver got out and smashed my car,’’ Marc says.

The Albany resident says the attacker smashed his car mirrors and broke the handles to the doors, which he had locked.

‘‘I’d done nothing to them. I’d never seen these guys,’’ he says.

‘‘I was stressed out because I didn’t know what to do … there was nowhere to go.’’

Marc reported the incident to police but says the biggest disappointment was the reaction of the people around him.

‘‘Not one person phoned the police and not one person got out of their car to help,’’ Marc says.

Marc, who has lived in New Zealand for six years, drives that stretch of road daily and the attack has made him nervous.

‘‘I come from South Africa where hijacking is very prominent and you must lock your doors - and that came back to me,’’ he says. ‘‘I never thought that happened in New Zealand.’’

Police say the incident is under investigation.
