Conquer back pain with Rosedale Rd Osteopaths
Research has shown that 80 per cent of people suffer from back pain at some time in their life.
Back pain can have a significant impact on quality of life and is a major cause of time off work. Research shows that chronic pain is also associated with depression, anxiety and poor sleep.
Why does back pain occur?
There are many reasons for back pain and for effective prevention and treatment it’s important to examine each case individually. While many episodes are caused by an obvious injury, some back pain can seem to occur for no reason, or as the result of a very minor strain – even one that occurred years ago.
There are certain types of accidents that can contribute to back pain, even if they did not cause pain at the time. Here are some of the most common ones:
Lifting heavy or awkward weights including babies, children and shopping can cause back strain, especially if done incorrectly. If the spine is already under stress from another cause, it may only take a small weight to cause strain. The spine is often jerked or twisted during accidents or falls and parts can become impacted or compressed. Sit-down falls such as the base of the spine, the impact of the head on the top of the spine causes neck strain. Headaches and neck problems are common with this type of injury.
During childbirth the mother’s pelvis can become distorted as the baby’s head descends. Often distortion corrects itself, but if severe it can remain for many years and disrupt spinal and pelvic mechanics. This can cause diverse symptoms including backache and headaches.
Osteopaths aim to identify and treat the cause of pain as well as investigating why the back was vulnerable to this strain. They can then improve overall spinal mechanics so it’s less likely to recur in the future.
