GUARD ATTACKED

Three prisoners used improvised weapons to attack a prison guard at Auckland Prison on Saturday. The Corrections Department issued statements on social media. They said a prison officer at the Paremoremo prison had been released from hospital on Saturday night following an ‘‘unprovoked attack’’. The prisoners were all taken to hospital and two returned to prison on Saturday night. Police are investigating the attack which is thought to be gang related. Prison director Andy Langley said the prison has a ‘‘zero tolerance towards violence policy. No assault against staff or other prisoners will be tolerated in prison however, unfortunately from time to time this will occur. Any prisoner who does use violence towards staff or fellow prisoners will be held to account.’’
