Takapuna parking gets overhaul

- TOM DILLANE

A complete overhaul of the chaotic parking restrictions around Takapuna shops is being planned by Auckland Transport.

The proposed changes will see a removal of set time limits where you instead pay for what you need, a 10 minute grace period for drop offs and pick ups, lower prices for short stays, and fewer parking signs generally.

From Monday to Saturday between 8am and 6pm fees will be $1 per hour for the first two hours, and $2 for any subsequent hour.

There will be no ultimate time limit on parking, and electronic payment methods, including mobile apps, will be introduced to top up parking.

However, of potential annoyance to shoppers, the large Anzac St carpark will not be included in rezoning and actually incur a price increase.

The busiest section of Hurstmere Rd in the heart of Takapuna shops will also not be included in the new parking zone and remain at existing prices.

The streets included in the parking zone changes span from one side of Burns Ave across to The Strand on the beachfront, and include sections of Lake Rd and Hurstmere Rd.

Auckland Transport is seeking feedback for the parking zone changes up until July 29.
