Moving on in cup competitio­ns

Birkenhead United and East Coast Bays waited until the fulltime whistle was blown to really unleash in the fourth round of the Chatham Cup.

The local derby was locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes in the national knockout football competitio­n.

In the following 30 minutes six more goals were scored as Birkenhead booked a spot in the quarterfin­als.

Birkenhead’s Godwin Darkwa opened the scoring in the 21st minute of the game and Bays’ Jordan Carter scored the equaliser in the 67th minute.

Bays had a chance to sneak victory when they rattled the crossbar with five minutes left in regular time but the match headed to extra time.

In the first period of extra time the score line quickly blew out to 4-1. With three Birkenhead players - David Parkinson, Ethan Galbraith and Tom Davis - finding the back of the net in the space of five minutes.

Bays mounted a comeback and got the score to 4-3 with goals for Dylan Stansfield and Judd Baker, before Roussin Nkoy scored to seal the 5-3 win for Birkenhead.

In a match that had plenty of feeling, a number of players were lucky not to find themselves in the referee’s notebook.

Forrest Hill Milford hosted Bay Olympic in another last 16 fixture, with the home side dominant in the 3-0 win over their fellow Northern Region Football League premiershi­p side.

Abdulla Khallisy scored in the 14th minute followed by Ryan de Vries in the 19th minute and player/coach Andy Boyens just before fulltime.

Forrest Hill last made the quarterfin­als in 2010.

In the Women’s Knockout Cup defending champions Glenfield Rovers beat Western Springs 5-0 to secure a semi-finals spot.

Glenfield’s goals came from a Katie Rood hat-trick as well as goals to Sydney Bultitude and Jess Innes.

Forrest Hill Milford upset Western Springs 3-2 courtesy of a double for Tayla Christense­n and a goal for Saskia Vosper.

In the latest round of Northern Region Football League action Hibiscus Coast beat North Shore 1-0 in the first division. In the second division Fencibles beat Takapuna 2-1 and Manukau City won 4-0 over Albany United.
