Northart joins forces with Whitespace gallery for new show
A group of Kiwi artists who share a concern for the environment are expressing their views in a new exhibition.
The Artist as Prophet is a collaboration between Northart and Whitespace galleries, and it presents the work of six artists.
A mixture of different mediums are used to comment on issues of climate change, species extinction and a fundamental connection to nature.
Northart manager and curator Wendy Harsant says she loves the concept of the show.
‘‘It was time we did something about the ecology and the environment,’’ Harsant says.
‘‘The focus of birds and extinction is a pertinent issue to the North Shore right now.’’
Whitespace director Deborah White says the two galleries often work together.
The Artist as Prophet was a way of pulling together a collective voice about environmental concerns, White says.
Painter Gary Currin, who features in the exhibition, is a longtime member of Northart and the Devonport community.
His oil on canvas entitled Conversations with the Moon (pictured) is over two metres wide and depicts people’s changing relationship with the Earth.
Other artists include Australian environmental artist Michael Hall, Nic Moon, Bing Dawe and Greer Twiss.
The Artist as Prophet hosts its opening event August 28 at 4pm.
Northart gallery, Norman King Square (opposite the Library) Ernie Mays St, Northcote.
Open daily from 10am till 4pm, until September 14.
