NZ choir needs members

- ZIZI SPARKS

The national choir for secondary school students is recruiting.

Westlake Girls High School student Te Ohorere Williams has spent the last 18 months with the choir and says it was a new experience that has given her friends for life.

The Campbells Bay resident says she has been in choirs throughout school but the National Secondary Schools Choir was a new experience.

‘‘It’s a different experience. You get so many more opportunities and it’s such a diverse crowd,’’ Williams says.

‘‘I got to meet some of my best friends and create great music.’’

Because the choir’s 56 members are spread all over the country, the group meets for one week of every school holidays.

Williams, 18, says a good fit for the group would be determined and passionate.

‘‘If you don’t love it you can’t do it for a long time.’’

A cycle in the choir lasts two years and culminates in an international tour. The outgoing choir was the guest at the International Choral Kathaumixw in Canada.

Members of the choir must be a secondary student, at least for their first year in the choir, and have a good voice and musical knowledge.

The selection process includes a written application before auditions are held around the country from September 26 till October 4.
