BRIDGES BETTER
On National Radio this morning (September 22), Adrian Orr who is the chief executive of the NZ Super Fund, stated he was looking for investments in such things as bridges around Auckland. We could have another bridge crossing of the harbour. That would be an ideal investment for Mr Orr.
Bridges are far cheaper to build than tunnels and there is no reason why we should put up with waiting till 2030, by which time there will be utter chaos on our roads across the harbour. The present bridge is already running near to full capacity at peak hours that are extending further into the day.
A bridge commencing at Esmonde Rd crossing Shoal Bay and terminating at the top of Customs Street East would give quick access to many parts of the city the hospital, university, southern and northwestern motorways, inner city and Tamaki Drive. It could also have the vital rail link that would feed into the northern busway near Esmonde Rd.
The North Shore needs a new team of aspiring candidates that will press hard to get this project under way now.

GOOD SAMARITAN NOTED
This morning on my walk from Milford to Castor Bay I observed kindness in action. An intermediate pupil was crying on the side of the road at the top of the hill. A man in a black SUV stopped, backed up and got out to see whether the boy had fallen off his bike and what had caused him to be distressed. By that time, I had joined the pair. The man then ascertained the boy’s worries, opened his wallet and gave him a $5 note. The man was a stranger to the boy, but his kindness solved an issue and the boy will now remember the last day of term fondly, prompted by the generosity of a Good Samaritan. David Guy

ALL THE RAGE
Steve Green wonders why people stick their tongues out in photos. Watch people taking ‘‘sefies’’ and see how many stick their tongues out. It seems it’s all the rage. Edward Hilson

FLOODING WOES
The recent flooding near La Tropezienne is evidence of the inevitable accumulation of road chip seal in our stormwater system. Ratepayers will of course pick up the tab and officials in AT who promote this product and the contractors will not be held responsible. The damage is hidden until heavy rains expose the blocked arteries of the stormwater system.
