LAWN BOWLS
Takapuna’s Chris Taylor and his four of Marty Martinengo, Walter Howden and Dennis Hale were surprise winners of the North Harbour centre’s champion of champions title. The Taylor lineup had a 16-13 win in the final over a strong Helensville four skipped by Bart Robertson.
Taylor won his first centre title as long ago as 1991-92 in the Dick Bree triples and in recent years has been the winning skip in two championship fours events. Howden, a member of the successful Harbour one-to-eight representative side, gained his second centre title and for Martinengo and Hale, who is only a second year lawn bowler, it was their first. Manly defied most predictions by beating an-inform Browns Bay four skipped by Elaine McClintock to win the women’s final. In the one-to-eight championship fours Birkenhead’s Jimmy Heath, Daymon Pierson, Jerome Rusk and Stacey Munro won the final from Browns Bay.
