Bike repair plans gear up

- LAINE MOGER

Health and safety is now even easier for budding cyclists in Kaipatiki, with five bike repair stations ready to be fitted around popular areas.

A total of $12,500 was unanimously approved by the Kaipatiki Local Board, June 21, for stations at Onepoto Domain, Birkenhead War Memorial Park, Shepherds Park, Birkenhead Library and Marlborough Park.

Kaipatiki Local Board deputy chairman John Gillon said he was inspired to bring the stations to Kaipatiki after seeing them in other Auckland locations.

Each station has a stand to hold the bike, a tyre pump and a selection of tools attached to tamper-proof stainless steel cables, Gillon said.

‘‘These will benefit the community by assisting parents to pump up tyres or repair their children’s bikes, without having to purchase - or remember to bring - expensive tools,’’ he said. ‘‘They also encourage community participation and bring people into the parks.’’

Bike Kaipatiki member Duncan Laidlaw said the repair stations would provide a great service for the community.

‘‘It’s a great idea for people who are not set up with their own workshops,’’ Laidlaw said.

However, they are more intended for new and casual riders, rather than commuters, he added.

Installation dates are still to be confirmed.
