Readers reveal naked selfie habits

A North Shore Times poll has revealed naked selfies and sexting are not just a phenomenon for millenials and young people.

Nearly a quarter of the 95 readers who responded to a Neighbourly.co.nz poll said they had snapped a naked picture.

Exactly half of the respondents aged 20 to 35 had taken a nude image, while 16 per cent of those aged 36 to 50 had also done so.

In the over-50s age category, 12 per cent admitted they had taken one of the explicit images.

Earlier this year, internet safety group Netsafe warned Kiwis sending naked selfies could put them in a sticky spot, with people sharing images without their consent.

Under the Harmful Digital Communications Act, passed in 2015, those posting messages and online material deliberately causing serious emotional distress can be prosecuted.

The majority of prosecutions so far have been for cases of nonconsensual sharing of intimate images, resulting in fines up to $50,000, up to two years’ jail for an individual, and up to $200,000 for a body corporate.

As of Friday last week, 23.2 per cent of total respondents aged 20 and above had taken one of the intimate images.

Of those,12.6 per cent were aged 20 to 35, 7.4 per cent were aged 36 to 50 and 3.2 per cent were older than 50.
