12 hour parking limits mooted
Cars left for several days at a time in a busy North Shore business area are causing problems for customers and workers needing to use limited on-street parking.
Concerned about a significant number of vehicles parked in the Rosedale roads of Vega Place, Atlas Place, Ascension Place and Whetu Place, for more than 24 hours at a time, Business North Harbour approached Auckland Transport (AT) with a request to investigate.
Long-stay parking in the four side streets off Constellation Drive, reduces the number of available parking spaces for customers and staff in the area, according to AT.
Business North Harbour general manager Janine Brinsdon said for three years the association has been trying to resolve the situation.
Airline crew and others catching the bus from Constellation Station to the airport have been identified as the people responsible for leaving cars parked for an extended period of time.
Unable to come to a solution with the parties involved, Brinsdon approached AT.
In response, AT is seeking feedback on P720 (12 hours) parking restrictions from Monday 8am to Friday 6pm.
‘‘We are still proposing all day parking (12 hours) but we want to avoid people parking for several days preventing others from parking and heading to work for the day,’’ AT media relations manager Mark Hannan said.
Similar restrictions are in place at Half Moon Bay and on Waiheke Island.
‘‘These restrictions work well in ensuring there is a fair turnover of parking for as many people as possible,’’ Hannan said.
Sections of all four of the cul-desac streets in question in Rosedale have existing yellow lines which prevent parking.
Brinsdon said the P720 restrictions would protect the available on-street parking for local business and give preference to those working and conducting business in the area, rather than those parking and leaving the area.
AT consultation on the proposed parking restrictions is open until October 26.
