Jacinda’s star dusts the Shore

- ZIZI SPARKS

Results now out from electoral booths show a surge in support for Labour compared with the last election.

In 2014, National won every booth on the North Shore, but this year several booths went to Labour in the ‘‘bellwether’’ electorate of Northcote: Maria Assumpta Parish Hall and Beach Haven Hall, both in Beach Haven, and Birkdale Intermediate School.

In the remainder of the Shore’s 80 booths, National had majority share of votes. However, all booths which existed in both 2014 and 2017 showed an increase in votes for the Labour Party.

Across the Northcote electorate, 32* per cent of party votes went to Labour this year, up from 22 per cent in 2014. National dropped from 51 per cent to 45.

At the Maria Assumpta hall, Labour attracted 46 per cent of the vote, up 11 per cent on 2014’s 35 per cent. At Beach Haven Hall, 42 per cent of votes were for Labour, up 14 per cent. At the school, Labour picked up 44 per cent of votes, up from 28 per cent.

The largest surge in Labour support was at Birkdale North School where 36 per cent of votes went to Labour, a jump of almost 20 per cent on 2014. But, support for National also rose at that booth.

Differences were more obvious at some booths on the Devonport Peninsula, which is in the North Shore electorate.

At Vauxhall School, Labour received 36 per cent of the party votes, up from 16 per cent. While National got 43 per cent, down from 56 per cent.

Then, at Stanley Bay School, National received 46 per cent of the party votes, a drop from 60 per cent in 2014. Labour’s 35 per cent was more than double the 17 per cent they gained in 2014.

Across the entire North Shore electorate, Labour almost doubled its result with 10,375 in 2017, compared with 5473 in 2014.

In the East Coast Bays support for Labour rose from 12 per cent in 2014 to 23 per cent in 2017.

In Upper Harbour, National attracted 54 per cent of votes in both 2014 and 2017 but Labour support rose from 23 per cent to 32 per cent.

While Labour support started to shine through, National MPs still retained their hold on the Shore, winning four of the five possible electorates, the exception being Te Tai Tokerau, which went to Labour’s Kelvin Davis.
