Auckland’s best pet-friendly cafes

- STAFF REPORTER

It’s almost summertime and nobody wants to be left at home on those long lazy days especially not the family pooch. Stuff has compiled a list of some great Auckland pet-friendly cafes so you don’t have to feel guilty when you go out, because your furry friend is welcome to come along. A sign of a great petfriendly cafe is al-fresco dining, a few water bowls, perhaps some designated doggy parking. And of course proximity to some of Auckland’s best beach and crater walks.

The Huia Foodstore

The Huia Foodstore is set beachside, almost at the end of the road in the Waitakere Ranges National Park.

There are plenty of safe swimming bays close by and the beautiful drive through the bush takes you past Kakamatua inlet, one of the few beaches out west where dogs can run freely.

Cornwall Park Cafe

It wouldn’t be summer without a trip to Cornwall Park.

Located in the heart of Greenlane, this domain is the largest area of parkland in Auckland City. The cafe sits atop a gentle sloping section of grass, with plenty of shade for tired dogs and plenty of space for gentle walks.

Takapuna Beach cafe

This is a very hip and very busy location but your dog will love the fact that it’s just a few steps away from the beach.

Last year the cafe offered a doggy degustation menu, so you know the owners love dogs as much as you.

The Takapuna Beach Cafe also has an all-day bistro menu and their own outstanding homemade ice cream.

Ponsonby Central

For dogs who want to see and be seen, this trendy location is ideal for canine spotting.

This is a central city location but close enough to beautiful dogfriendly parks like Western Park and Meola Reef to keep your pups happy.

The Cat Lounge

And for those who don’t have pets, Auckland also has dedicated cat cafes where you can come and spend some time with rescued felines who love the attention.

The Cat Lounge is located in Glenfield and can get very popular, so booking is recommended.

Children are welcome if they are closely supervised and though your own pets are not welcome here for obvious reasons.
