Artistic trio explore female identity

- LAINE MOGER

A trio of artistic women will share the limelight at an exhibition opening in a Devonport gallery, all by accident.

By happy coincidence, three woman artists, with three individual exhibitions that are thematically linked, have been scheduled to open at the same time at Devonport’s Depot Artspace.

However, artists Jacqueline Macleod, Beatrice Carlson and Robin Gibson, are happy about the accidental collaboration, in fact they are looking forward to it.

‘‘This is going to be a great show’’, artist Jacqueline Macleod said.

Each exhibition is a celebration of women or feminism in some way, using different artistic media and themes.

Macleod said the three were not planning to do anything together but the accident is ‘‘blending well’’.

‘‘Everyone brings his own people, but it will be wonderful to share,’’ Beatrice Carlson said.

Carlson is a French new-media artist living in Devonport, exploring the loss of identity to social media.

Her exhibition, Unwearable: 2010 – 2017 WOW Retrospective, is an exclusive exhibition of her last seven entries into the renowned World of Wearable Art (WOW) Awards.

Unwearable will also include a selection of Carlson jewellery designs, accessory designs and drawings.

‘‘It’s about women, it’s about identity,’’ she said.

Similarly, Jacqueline Macleod’s Memory for $ale is about how network technologies affect communication.

‘‘In terms of community it [technology] brings us together and pulls us apart,’’ she said.

Macleod expresses this through painting, digital works, possible sculpture.

Robin Gibson’s Solace in Familiar Things explores the oftentimes self-indulgent consumerist society.

Gibson’s paintings observe characters in relation to a love for objects that society so greedily consumes and disposes of.

Despite these objects having become the accessories of our identity.

Gibson said her works are often described as humorous or sarcastic, which she loves.

‘‘I like playing with cryptic things,’’ she said.

Attend the opening event November 10, from 6pm at Depot Artspace, Devonport.
