Panuku buys $2m shops

Ahead of confirmation of its plan for Takapuna’s Anzac St car park, Auckland Council development arm Panuku Development has bought a property backing onto the site for $2 million.

Panuku has confirmed the purchase of 30 Hurstmere Rd in June this year.

‘‘Panuku will investigate opportunities for this property following a decision on whether the change of use of 40 Anzac Street is approved,’’ project development director Clive Fuhr said.

Last week, the council deferred making a decision on changing the Anzac St site’s use from car park to mixed use, halting Panuku’s plans to develop mixed use buildings on the site.

A decision is expected to be made by March. The council also owns property at 34 and 38 Hurstmere Rd.

The Takapuna Action Group, which has actively protested against Panuku’s plans for the Anzac St car park, was concerned by the purchase.

Spokesperson Ruth Jackson questioned why a purchase made in June had been kept from public knowledge for so long.

She wanted Panuku to be clear with the community about the intended use for the property, after spending a significant amount of ratepayers’ money on the site.

‘‘We can’t fathom why they’re spending $2 million of our money on property we don’t need.’’
