Daycare shocks

The Hibiscus and Bays Local Board is shocked to discover a resource consent they had asked to be publicly notified, has already been approved.

In May, the board was consulted on an application to construct and operate adaycare in Mairangi Bay.

The chair and deputy chairwomen, Julia Parfitt and Janet FItzgerald, visited the site, near the bay’s southern roundabout and provided their thoughts on the daycare in writing.

‘‘We have serious concerns about traffic movement, about the number of vehicles that will access this site and that it is immediately opposite a residential complex and a close proximity to the roundabout,’’ they wrote.

They were also worried about the lack of carparks and requested the application be fully notified.

Resource consent for the 100-child centre was approved, without any notification, in a decision released in July this year. It said there would be no ‘‘adversely affected persons’’.

Yet, Parfitt said they were surprised to hear about the decision by reading it in the paper.

‘‘I would have thought every single person using that roundabout is going to be impacted.’’

She said the daycare, combined with new apartments, would have a cumulative effect on traffic. ‘‘This is not a small centre, it’s got 100 children and a huge number of traffic movements.’’
