Round the Bays trainer pushes team to success

- KENDALL HUTT

Bear crawls and frog squats have left Ports of Auckland Round the Bays team the All-in Allports unable to walk up or down the stairs, but, with only two weeks left until the event, they are pushing on.

The family said they ultimately enjoyed their training sessions with fitness instructor Tyler Wallace.

‘‘Tyler’s really good. He knows what our limits are and pushes us a bit further. It’s good to have someone pushing you, otherwise you just stop. He’s a taskmaster, but he’s very nice with it,’’ David Allport said during a break in training on February 15.

Training, a foreign experience to the Allports four weeks ago, had also proved to be a new experience for Wallace.

‘‘This is probably the first family I’ve trained. I’ve been putting a lot more time into it as well,’’ he said.

Wallace, who had started work as a fitness instructor at Glenfield Pool and Leisure Centre more than a year ago, said training the Allports had been ‘‘really fun’’.

‘‘They’re pretty new to this sort of training, so there’s definitely been a few challenges. But they’ve been really good, pushing themselves pretty hard and I definitely think they’ll see results.’’

Wallace himself took part in Round the Bays last year with the leisure centre, finishing the event in just over 38 minutes.

‘‘I didn’t actually train too hard myself, I was pretty much just relying on my rugby league training.’’

Wallace had played rugby league for nine years, for both East Coast Bays and the Northcote Tigers.

Starting athletics when he was 9 and rugby league when he was 13, Wallace said it was his passion for these sports which drew him to be a fitness instructor.

‘‘I thought, ‘I’d like to do this as a job’, so I went to uni and then

got into this.’’

In 10 days Wallace was about to become his own boss, he said.

‘‘Soon I’m about to start personal training here. I’m going to start a company called Acefit Personal Training and hopefully I will help fulfil people’s goals and get them results.’’

For Wallace, seeing results in people was the greatest reward as a trainer. ‘‘You can’t get more satisfaction than seeing someone happy and giving yourself credit for getting them there, as well as the hard work they put in.’’
