A humble Kiwi photographer from Torbay has beat out 6000 other hopefuls and high stakes to be chosen as Discovery’s next global intern.
Gib-stopper and freelance photographer Kaleb Anderson, 22, has continued New Zealanders’ reign over the international competition, which sees the winning intern travel to five countries.
Currently earning the first two stamps on his passport on holiday in Thailand and Cambodia, Anderson said his head was still spinning from the news.
‘‘I was really lost for words when I first found out. It’s finally just started to hit me now, but it feels so incredible. I’m definitely super excited about it all.’’
Anderson said, as soon as the announcement was made last week, messages of congratulations started flooding in. ‘‘The support New Zealand-wide has been absolutely phenomenal.’’
A series of public voting saw Anderson shortlisted in both the top 25 and then top 5. He told Stuffit was this team effort which had helped earn him the win.
Interviewed by Discovery three weeks ago, Anderson said the main thrust of questions had been ‘‘’Who is Kaleb Anderson?’’’
‘‘Although I was nervous headed into the interview, I knew in my heart who I am and what I’m about.’’
The network was excited to have Anderson as their next Discovery Intern, spokesperson Amanda Herbert said. ‘‘He’s a talented content maker and there’s a real authenticity to his work that we feel our audience will connect with as they follow his global adventure.’’
Anderson said the top five hopefuls - Andrew Cooney, Jeffrey Kieffer, Kate Carragher and Sophie Piearcey - had bonded over the journey and become friends, with a road trip on the cards.
In the next few months, Anderson will travel to Japan, the United States, Germany, South Africa and Croatia.
While all were ‘‘super amazing’’, Anderson said, Japan had been on his bucket list.
‘‘I grew up with a lot of Japanese homestays and two of them taught me a bit of the language. I think the whole culture over there is worth documenting and experiencing.’’
Fellow Aucklander Ben Mikha took out the competition last year.
