On my first day in the office, I attended a passionate community board meeting, no really.

People in colourful winter coats packed inside and clapped vigorously when it was announced Yachting New Zealand had withdrawn its application for a hard stand, at the north end of Takapuna Beach, just before the meeting.

While people presenting to the board had the wind taken out of their sails, they spoke eloquently of a strong community which welcomes people to enjoy its beaches. That was certainly my experience when I moved to Devonport almost a decade ago.

A remarkable aspect of the campaign has been the power of the Save Takapuna Beach Holiday Park Facebook page.
