New Zealand has one of the highest rates of suicide in the western world, and, sadly, last year’s figures were the highest since records began eight years ago. For Maori, outcomes improve when young people are supported to connect with their language, culture, whakapapa and whanau. So I applaud the approach the Depot Artspace in Devonport is taking to building community support for those affected by suicide. It has to be an important part of the answer. It is puzzling why, when we live in such a beautiful country, we have such appalling statistics for depression and suicide. There have to be cultural aspects, such as a history of being staunch ‘‘man alone’’ types. Those most affected, young people, talk about feeling isolated. Starting conversations in the community can help build a shared understanding of how to support people suffering from depression and their loved ones. A caring community can make a difference.
