Sao Paulo to Torbay

-

Gabriela Nunes is a volunteer at the Kaipatiki Project Centre. She lives in Torbay after immigrating from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

How long have you lived here and where are you from?

I’ve lived in Torbay since December 2015. Describe your neighbourhood.

It’s a lovely, green neighbourhood with calm streets and a beautiful beach that I love. It also has wonderful views, a nice shopping centre and great schools.

What is your earliest memory of the Shore? I remember my first day in New Zealand when I came on vacation. I remember thinking, wow! What a dream to live here.

What are the greatest advantages to living here?

You have the best of both worlds. The big city of Auckland but, at the same time, such a calm place that makes me feel like I am living in a small town.

Where is your favourite North Shore beach and why?

I love Waiake Beach. How is it possible I have such a lovely place just a few minutes away from my home? It’s our backyard paradise.

Who is the person you admire the most and why?

I admire Kiwi people in general for being so welcoming, honest and happy.

What do you like least about the Shore and how can we fix it?

The traffic is very stressful and I hear a lot of people complaining about it.

Where is the best place to have a meal?

My kids and I like going to La Tropezienne

Cafe.

What are you doing this weekend?

I usually go to Long Bay Regional Park. My kids love playing there and we walk through the bushes up to Granny’s Bay. We always search for whales and dolphins by the sea before finishing with a nice picnic or barbecue. Perfect.
