Inquest date set for teen’s death

- STAFF REPORTER

A date, June 12, has been set for an inquest into the killing of Hillcrest teenager Christie Marceau.

Marceau, 18, was stabbed to death in November 2011 by her acquaintance Akshay Chand.

Marceau, two months earlier, had been kidnapped and assaulted by Chand, who was sent to Mt Eden prison.

Chand had been released on bail, including a 24-hour curfew, on the charges of kidnapping and assaulting Marceau.

He lived about one kilometre away from the Marceau home.

Chand was found not guilty by reason of insanity of her murder, and is now a psychiatric patient at the Mason Clinic.

As a special patient, he can only be approved for release from care by the minister of health.

The teenager’s parents have been critical of the bail system and succeeded in having more stringent conditions brought in.

Chand was released on bail shortly before Marceau’s death, following earlier offending against her in which he had kidnapped and assaulted her. The family have said their daughter would be alive if Chand had not been released on bail.

An earlier date set for an inquest was adjourned.

On Wednesday, February 22, the Ministry of Justice released a new coronial schedule which said the inquest would be set for June 12 this year.
