LAWN BOWLS

-

Led by Browns Bay’s Elaine McClintock, North Harbour bowlers excelled at Auckland’s recent Trusts New Zealand Open. McClintock, runner-up in the national singles final in 2015, partnered Bay of Plenty’s Marilyn McLeod in winning the women’s pairs. That gave McClintock a notable double as, earlier, she had won the singles final 21-17 from Queenstown’s Margaret O’Connor. McClintock’s Browns Bay club-mate, Anne Dorreen, also won a final, leading for O’Connor and another Central Otago bowler, Christine

Buchanan in the triples. In the men’s events a youthful North Harbour line-up of Brown’s Bay Scott Evans and Rory Soden plus Birkenhead’s Scott Mouton won the triples final from a David Hood-skippered Northland side. But two former Black Jacks, Browns Bay’s Kerry Chapman and Tony Grantham, just missed out in the pairs, losing the final to Aucklanders Jamie Hill and Chris Le Lievre.

SUPER RUGBY

The Blues kicked off the Super Rugby season with a 58-18 win against the Rebels in Melbourne on February 23. Rieko Ioane scored a hat-trick of tries, the first time a Blues player has crossed the line three times since 2013, in the big win. The Tana Umagacoached Blues will play a game in Albany in round 5 of the competition on March 25 against the Bulls at QBE Stadium kicking off at 7.35pm.
