The inquest into the killing of 18-year-old Christie Marceau in her Hillcrest home in 2011, has revealed a chain of failings leading up to the decision to bail Akshay Chand, 19, to his home near hers. The unbearably sad outcome could have been avoided. A forensic nurse who assessed Chand was under too much time pressure to file her report in time for it to be considered. A psychiatrist assessed Chand for fitness to stand trial, but the judge referred to his report in making a bail decision. Police felt the judge didn’t consider their bail concerns. Reporter Tommy Livingston attended the inquest and provides a considered view (page 9). Tommy says it would be simplistic to blame the judge, as everyone involved played a part. More information, opposition and time could have been put into making sure Chand was never allowed to be bailed. He notes a lack of insight among those involved. Sadly, the Marceaus haven’t received the apologies and taking of responsibility that would assist healing. - Jodi Yeats
