Thank goodness the Olympics have finished and we can all get a good night’s sleep.

These have been the most successful games ever for New Zealand and the success of our younger athletes bodes well for the future.

Meanwhile, we are running photographs and a few words from candidates in the local body elections for the next few weeks. The first of these are on page six. Candidates are asked to submit a photograph and tell us in 50 words what qualifies them to be a good representative. Please email these to midweek@dailynews.co.nz. Remember to tell us what seat you are standing for.

Our front page lead is sobering. It urges us to face the harm that alcohol does in our community. It is not the fact that we drink but how much we drink. Unfortunately, there is also a strong link to drunkenness and family violence, the topic of this week’s Conversation. It would appear that no matter how much the message is aired it doesn’t sink in with many people.
