Go walkabout for cheap coffee

- YVETTE BATTEN

It’s not too late to start enjoying $1 coffee on Wednesday mornings. During August Let’s Go is holding its annual Walk to Work Wednesdays, an initiative to encourage people to get out into the fresh air by walking, biking or taking the bus during the cooler months of the year.

The promotion has paved the way for a Wednesday morning social occasion for various staff members of Sport Taranaki and New Plymouth District Council.

Maree Judd, from Sport Taranaki chose to park her car a distance away with her co-worker Therese Campbell, and walk to the nearest participating cafe.

‘‘It’s actually been really nice,’’ Judd said.

She thought the promotion was a great way to encourage sustainable transport.

Campbell really enjoyed the walk. ‘‘It’s a lovely, sunny, fresh winter’s day. It invigorates you and gives you energy to start your working day.’’

Fellow Sport Taranaki staff member Joelle Xavier is a keen cyclist.

‘‘I have been known to take my car because it was spitting and hate it so much I turn back and pick up my bike.’’

She loves that cycling, as a form of transport, is also a way of exercising without thinking about it. ‘‘It’s also a social thing to do. It does encourage community living rather than everybody being individual in their little cars.’’

Council staff member Dion Cowley normally bikes to work.

‘‘For me this turns my normal commute into a social occasion, which makes it a bit more fun. Often I sell the bike ride to myself in the morning as a good alternative to a coffee with the fresh air in the face, but on these days I get a coffee as well.’’

Let’s Go spokeswoman Liz Beck said the promotion, with free drinks available before 10.30am, was going well so far.

‘‘Talking to the cafes that have been involved the majority of them are getting a great number coming through,’’ she said.

There are two more Wednesdays left in August to get involved.

People just need to pop into participating cafes and pick up a Walk to Work Wednesdays card.

Participating cafes include Joe’s Garage, Petit Paris, Escape Coffee Roasters, The Federal Store, Little Fed, and Starbucks.
