Organist begins new series of concerts
Anew series of lunchtime organ recitals has been launched at St Joseph’s Church, Powderham St. These complement the hugely successful series at the Taranaki Cathedral. Performances by Christopher Luke will be on the first Tuesday of each month at 1pm (following the midday mass), and the next is on Tuesday, October 4. Entry is by gold coin donation and there’s tea or coffee to follow.
The Cathedral series continues on Thursday, October 20 in the Interim Cathedral at 12.15pm.
Luke will give his final hymn lecture for the year on Wednesday, October 5 at 11.30am at the Interim Cathedral. He will explore the origins of the wellknown paraphrase of Psalm 23, The Lord’s my shepherd, sung to the tune Crimond, with interesting facts and recordings to listen to, as well as the chance to sing the hymn itself. Entry by gold coin donation.
The final concert in the Chamber Music New Zealand 2016 Kaleidoscopes series will be something very special, with the UK ‘‘Supergroup’’, the London Conchord Ensemble.
The string, wind and piano ensemble, comprising principals from many major British orchestras, includes violinist Daniel Rowland, from the Brodsky Quartet. He is joined by top-ranking players of cello, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn and piano and together they offer a wonderfully varied programme with many different colours and combinations.
There will be Mozart, Beethoven and Bach, along with a Ginestera duo and the exciting sounding Bachianas Brasileiras No. 6 by Villa-Lobos.
It’s on Sunday, October 16 at 5pm in the Theatre Royal, and there’s a pre-concert talk by Catherine Gibson at 4.15pm.
There will also be the launch of the 2017 series on the night, so a chance to look ahead to the delights on offer, along with a complimentary glass of bubbly. An annual subscription gives significant discounts to the year’s series of concerts and there are many different options to give flexibility.
Also on Sunday October 16, the Taranaki Jazz Club presents its next monthly event, with the Drinking & Dancing Society, which promises a very different kind of musical fun. It’s at 3pm at The Mayfair.
Laura Collins and the Back Porch Blues Band are bringing their own brand of the blues live to New Plymouth. At the 4th Wall Theatre on Saturday October 1 you’ll no doubt hear Nina Simone, Koko Taylor, Etta James, Bonnie Raitt and Laura’s take on some unsuspecting men, Bill Withers and BB King among them.
