Fertility yoga classes start
Sivananda Yoga Centre is now holding Yoga For Fertility classes. Bhavani Davies said the process of trying for a baby was an emotional journey so she began classes to support people in the community who want to conceive, including those struggling with fertility issues.
‘‘I’m not guaranteeing yoga is going to bring you a baby, but being in a fertility process is still a journey in itself,’’ she said.
‘‘Through being in the moment, being happy in your body, and celebrating that within you, it helps you to release that anxiety of whatever the outcome might be.
‘‘We just try to be more in the process than in the outcome.’’
Davies said fertility yoga could help conception because it increased circulation to the pelvic region. ’’There is quite a lot of research about that. Oxygen and circulation can definitely improve the proper function of the reproductive system.’’
During classes Davies focuses on breathing exercises to improve circulation in the system, stretches that have emphasis on the pelvic region and the spinal column, and biomagnetism.
She put her idea for a class on social media and contacted some of her friends. ‘‘I started to get a response. There’s actually a need for it in the community. I didn’t realise it before I put it ou there that there was a need for it.’’
The first class was held in early September with a core group of about four people, and Davies keeps in regular contact with participants as to when they would like to meet. It’s open to both male and female.
‘‘I think the exercises benefit both. They’re not only for women. The poses that we do, the focus on the pelvic region and the spinal column, also benefit the male reproductive system.’’
Davies encourages people to record the classes on their phones or various devices so they can take the practice home with them.
She also runs a mums and bubs classes. ‘‘It [yoga] can also really help that emotional state of becoming a parent from the planning and once you’re a parent. There’s a lot of things involved around it that yoga can help with.’’
