North Taranaki Midweek

Double deca-dent bus coming

- CHRISTINE WALSH

The cult-ish double-decadent Moustache Milk & Cookie Bus is en route to New Plymouth during its six-week road trip, Mo Bus’ Biggest Office Run, thanks to a plea from a local follower.

The Mo Bus’ team arrives February 16, to park up outside the North Taranaki SPCA OpShop in Devon St West. For one day only people can buy their baked-fresh daily sweet treats from 11am - 3pm, with 10 percent of the day’s proceeds going to the local animal charity.

On offer is a range of cookie flavours such as their top seller, the Snickers bar cookie, or the quintessential Whittaker’s chocolate chunk.

Op-shop volunteer Gemma Alderdice was one of more than 30,000 Facebook followers of the bright yellow mobile cookie bar. She was quick to bite after learning its North Island bus route was being selected via online nominations.

Alderdice’s subtle plea online stated: ‘‘The good folk at spca op shop New Plymouth would LOVE you to stop by their way. A friendly bunch, both animals and humans. Our amazing team of volunteers deserve a treat.’’

Owner operator of the 1978 Bedford bus business Deanna Yang needed no persuading. Her bus with its full commercial kitchen was formerly a run-down blue and white school bus originally from the region.

‘‘I feel very proud coming back to Taranaki. It’s been two years exactly since we were last there. We wanted to bring her home so her original owner could see how we had restored her.’’

Yang is a self-professed cat lady who says cats were her spirit animal. Every birthday for the past five years Moustache have committed her birthday gifts to the SPCA. ’’Instead of gifts, I ask for things that the SPCA need.’’

‘‘Giving back to the community and to those who don’t have a voice themselves, such as animals is an important part of Moustaches ethos.’’

SPCA’s Jackie Poles-Smith said the crew was looking forward to their arrival, and are grateful for Yang’s generous pledge at this time of year they are busy there’s a lot of kittens being born. ’’A lot of the money will be going towards de-sexing to reduce the number of kittens that are around and look after the kittens we do have.’’

She said on the day people could grab a milkshake and cookie then have a gander around the shop.
