North Taranaki children and parents are invited to get cooking in a mud kitchen at Urenui Playcentre next week.

The new kitchen is set up with cooking equipment and plenty of ingredients - foam, paint and mud - and was funded by a New Zealand Lottery Commission grant. It is an addition to the 16 indoor and outdoor play areas at Urenui Playcentre, which will be open to Taranaki parents and children, aged 0 to 6 years, as part of annual Playcentre Awareness Week.

‘‘Get messy, have fun and be a part of your child’s early childhood development in our exciting play areas at the centre,’’ Urenui Playcentre president Stephanie Richardson said.

Urenui Playcentre is opening its doors on Tuesday, March 7 and Thursday, March 9. It is one of 17 Playcentres in Taranaki, based on child initiated play. It also offers parents free adult education programmes that emphasise parenting and early childhood education with play, learning, development and parenting skills. Urenui Playcentre is a co-operative run by parents and other whanau. It is fully licensed and required to meet Education Ministry standards of the Early Childhood Curriculum, Te Wha¯ riki.

‘‘Come along with your babies and little ones to enjoy a morning of play and learning with other families. Morning tea is provided so just bring a sun hat and change of clothes for your children,’’ Richardson said.

Urenui Playcentre is on Takiroa Street, Urenui and open from 9am to midday on Tuesday, March 7 and Thursday, March 9. Taranaki Playcentres can be contacted on 06 7567570.
