FROM YOUR PAPER
Earlier this week Taranaki, like the rest of the country, commemorated Anzac Day. Once again, it was a particularly moving occasion and a reminder to us all that we are getting better and better at remembering those who paid the ultimate price to defend our freedom.
Anzac day has also become more than that. It nowadays serves as a day when we pay tribute to all of those brave men and women who have fought on our behalf in the numerous wars and conflicts that continue to plague the world.
What makes today’s celebrations memorable is the way the young generation have responded to the call to remember them. They are discovering the contribution members of their own family made. Here in Taranaki, we paid a terrible price. So many young men were called away to both world wars and so many stayed over there.
Today, sadly, the fear of war is once again upon us. We can only hope that sanity prevails.
