Help, support for family with newborn

- SUPPLIED

Taranaki families struggling to cope with difficult circumstances and a new born baby now have somewhere to turn for help.

Nurture Taranaki is an early intervention programme that has already seen great results in Canterbury for more than 20 years operating as Early Start.

TSB Community Trust has partnered with Te Puna Trust to provide the programme. Te Puna Trust is a charitable organisation managed by the Taranaki Police Youth Development office.

The programme is offered to first time pregnant women who would benefit from long-term support, encouragement and one-one parenting education. The scientificbased curriculum of the PIPE parenting programme that runs inside the service, is proving very interesting, fun and worthwhile for the parents who have been involved over the past year.

It is now widely accepted that the first 1000 days of a child’s life are the most influential in the long-term well-being of that child and the later adult.

Nurture Taranaki addresses not only parenting but many aspects of

the environment that can contribute to well-being, including home budgeting, nutrition, relationships and other factors that a parent may be curious about.

Places on the programme are available in the Waitara and Bell Block areas, so referrals are now being accepted by Te Puna Trust Nurture Taranaki, from families, schools and any support services.
