North Taranaki Midweek

Taranaki music lovers spoilt for choice

- ANNE BOVETT

Once more there is an eclectic range of music on offer in the coming weeks, from the local to the international.

Black Spider Stomp is back by popular demand at the Taranaki Jazz Club on Sunday October 1. The five leading Wellington musicians deliver a driving pumping style of gypsy swing in the tradition of Django Reinhardt, the great band leader.

The next lunchtime organ recital at St Joseph’s Church is on Tuesday October 3 at 1pm. Christopher Luke will present works by Richard Lloyd, June Nixon, Henry Smart and Samuel Wesley. Gold coin donation supporting the Society of St Vincent de Paul.

The day after, Wednesday, October 4, is the next in the 2017 Hymn Lecture Series at the Interim Cathedral at 11.30am. Christopher Luke will consider the hymn All creatures of our God and King, written by St Francis of Assisi and made famous by Mr Bean. Gold coin donation.

Young artists have some great educational opportunities coming up. The Music Innovation Trust of Taranaki, supported by the Dame Malvina Major Foundation and the TSB Community Trust, presents its fourth Taranaki Performing Arts Conference (TPAC) from October 9-11 at Sacred Heart Girls’ College (in the second week of the holidays). It caters for school students who are passionate about dance, drama and music. For more information on the exciting range of workshops and an application form, please email mitt@taranakicathedral.org.nz.

Three local groups come together to present Spring Fling on Sunday, October 15 at 2.30pm at St Andrew’s Church. Living Harmony, the Taranaki Male Choir and the Devon Hotel New Plymouth Brass each present individual brackets and combined items.

After the holidays, the Taranaki Youth Orchestra is opening up its rehearsal time for a junior orchestra, open to all students who have been learning an orchestral instrument for a year or more who would like a taste of playing in an orchestra. Percussion players are also most welcome to join. Rehearsals will be from 6 - 7pm on Wednesdays at Sacred Heart Performing Arts Centre. Call conductor Jocelyn Beath (067579379) for further information or email joc.beath@xtra.co.nz
